As of right now, it seems like driverless cars are the next big thing about to break out into the world. Companies such as Tesla and GM have been working on driverless cars for only a couple years now, and they already have working models that are street-legal. Driverless cars look like they’re going to be the ‘it’ technology of 2020, so lets look at the impact they will have on the world.
I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that as a whole, this technology will benefit mankind. In 2017, there were an estimated 40,000 motor vehicle-related deaths. Driverless cars are proven to be safer than regular cars, which will reduce that number drastically. The introduction of driverless cars will save lives, but that’s not the only benefit we will receive from them. Since vehicular collisions will be at an all-time low, so will traffic. With every car communicating with other cars instantaneously, there will be virtually zero traffic. Traffic jams will be a thing of the past and there probably won’t even be a need for stop signs or traffic lights. You can also forget about worrying about parking whenever you go somewhere. Driverless cars will be able to drop you off at the door and park far away, and then when you’re ready to go, the car will pick you up by itself. All in all, the prospect of driverless cars is a very appealing one.
That’s not to say that there won’t be some negative impacts. Trucking jobs are going to be non-existent once transport trucks can drive themselves, so that’s going to be a lot of people out of jobs. The auto insurance industry is also going to take a hit. With driverless cars, car owners will have to spend much less in insurance, so the insurance companies’ incomes are going to drop. Some might argue this is a good thing, though.
In conclusion, I think that the integration of driverless cars into the world will have a great and positive impact on the way we live our lives.
